Entrepreneurship, innovation and human-centered design – the present and future of Mechanical Engineering education at UW Bothell campus.

Summary:

Design thinking has infiltrated many aspects of education and practice, especially in STEM fields. In this presentation, I’ll first define design thinking then review how it informs how we teach mechanical engineering at  UW Bothell campus.  While quite successful, I’ll close by speculating on how engineering education needs to continue to evolve, resting on the foundation of design thinking.

Dr. Pierre Mourad’s Bio

I hold a Professorship at the University of Washington, affiliated with departments whose interests are defined by brain disorders (Neurosurgery [primary appointment]) or have an interest in developing medical technology (Engineering and Mathematics [primary appointment]; Bioengineering [adjunct appointment]; Applied Physics Laboratory [adjunct appointment]). My research and pedagogy target translational research and commercialization, in collaboration with medical doctors and engineers. Specifically, I bring physics – generally ultrasound – to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases or disorders of the brain. Of prime importance, I work to address clinically relevant problems in a manner that has the best chance to improve clinical outcomes as quickly as possible.  My research moves from in vitro studies through commercialization steps that include pre-clinical trials of devices associated with my work. I also create companies based upon my technology – four companies to date, one still active, another two under consideration.  In addition, I teach ‘Entrepreneurship for Engineers’, whose target is inculcation within our engineering undergraduates the attitude, mindset as well as skills and knowledge germane to (medical) device development.
